“United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future. ”

---The Global theme of Desertification and Drought Day 2024

Land degradation and climate change are signed as the growing sence of instability factors in many parts of the world.

With the trends in production, urbanization and environmental degradation, we are losing and wasting too much land. We are losing our connection to the Earth. We are gradually lossing the water, soil and biodiversity which support our life. We have to change the way we use and manage land. Even small changes today can lead to a very different tomorrow.---Ms. Monica Babu, Executive Secretary of the UNCCD

Do you know that, the global desertification area has reached 36 million square kilometers, or 24% of the total land area, equivalent to the land area of Russia, Canada, China and the United States combined, and is still expanding at a rate of about 60,000 square kilometers per year.

The situation prompted the international community to reach a consensus on combating desertification, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was adopted in Paris, France, on June 17, 1994, and came into force on December 26, 1996.

The core objective of the Convention is the joint effort by governments, subregional and regional action programmes, working with donors, local communities and non-governmental organizations, to take on the challenges of desertification, reduce poverty among the population and improve food, water and energy security.

GREENING PROGRAM is an ecological civilization construction project launched by UNITAR CIFAL Hubei (Hubei International Training Centres for Authorities and Leaders, UNITAR ), based on the goals of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

It aims to improve the ecology of desertified land around the world and is in line with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The main goal of GREENING PROGRAM is to assist local governments to achieve---

① zero land degradation,

② poverty reduction,

③ food and water security,

④ biodiversity protection,

⑤ climate change mitigation and adaptation, and

⑥ sustainable livelihood.

To achieve the objectives above, we will accelerate action through:

  1. green planting,

  2. soil and water management and

  3. scientific and technological innovation, and other means,

to continuously increase the global green area and achieve sustainable development in desertification areas.

Governments, NGOs, and businesses and individuals from around the world are making sustained efforts to achieve these goals.

The study shows that since the beginning of 2000, the global green area increased by 5%, about the size of an Amazon.com rainforest, of which 25% came from China.
